About ShineCity

ShineCity is a community organisation that delivers group mentoring and self-development programmes to the

Whanganui community, to encourage and assist individuals to reach their potential.

ShineCity began in 2011 after a group attended a women’s conference, hearing from members of the

the community, who shared about the issues girls and women were facing in the Whanganui community.

This resulted in a group of volunteers deciding to deliver the ShineGirl Programme

in a local school.  Since that time the number and frequency of ShineGirl courses being

delivered have increased and a follow-up programme (Nga Toa) has been implemented.  After requests from the community,

ShineCity also started programmes for women (ShineWomen) and boys (Strength) and expanded their follow-up programmes  (Nga Toa and

ShineCreate).

ShineCity also offers an Apprenticeship Programme in partnership with Careerforce NZ assisting interns to get practical experience and

gain a certificate in Health & Wellbeing.

ShineCity has registered charitable status under Converge Trust, who oversee and provide governance to the organisation.

ShineCity is run by a leadership team, and includes part-time employees and volunteers.  All

volunteers delivering the programmes are interviewed, referenced and police checked.

The organisation receives no formal funding, operating on grants, sponsorship and fundraising.
